Johnston VBC 2012 Coaching Staff

Laura Albrecht Laura Albrecht This will be Laura’s second year coaching for JVBC. Having played school and club volleyball for many years, Laura has a great understanding of the game along with four years of coaching experience.  She has continued to play volleyball after high school in various leagues and tournaments. Laura also coaches 8th grade volleyball at Johnston Middle School.
     
Rod Cooling   Rod is the head coach at HLV, Victor (5 years).  He rebuilt a program that fell from a SICL power to the bottom.  This year they made Regional Finals only to fall to #1 Holy Trinity.  He is a strong fundamentals based coach that believes the players must have a stake in their own development. Rod takes a strong team oriented approach to all aspects of the game.  Has also coached AAU basketball and softball for many years.  Was a 3 sport all-conference athlete.  
     
Lindsey Cosgriff Lindsey Lindsey has played for JVBC since she was 12, which helped her build her skills and knowledge of the game to be apart of the State qualifying Johnston team in 2006.  She was a Defensive Specialist at Grandview. This will be her fourth year coaching for the Johnston Volleyball Club.
     
Amy Daniels Amy Growing up with a club volleyball tournament every weekend allowed Amy to learn what it takes to succeed on the court. In high school Amy helped lead her team, Cedar Falls, to it's first state berth in four years and was an all-metro and all-conference selection. This will be Amy's third year with JVBC.
     
Teresa Donaldson   Teresa played school volleyballat HLV, and was a setter and right side hitter for Curt Larkin from 1999-2003. She has a great understanding and passion for the game, on and off the court.

Teresa will stress the term "teamwork" as the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. We welcome Teresa to JVBC!
     
Lea Hartigan Lea Hartigan

Lea is a former all-conference performer at Wayne State College and Iowa High School player of the year, a three-year starter for the NCAA Division II Wayne State. Hartigan earned All-Northern Sun Conference honors as a junior and she was a two-year captain and took home academic all-conference honors following her junior and senior campaigns.

Hartigan came from Treynor High School, where she was stand-out, four-sport athlete. She was the Class 2A State Player of the Year as a senior, she led the Treynor volleyball team to four state tournaments and earned all-tournament honors twice.

Lea will join Sarah with the JVBC 16N team.

     
Emma Harmeyer  

Emma attends Dowling Catholic High School and has been a varsity setter for two years.  She was co-captain of the 2011 team, leading them to a 27-8 record.  Emma earned first team all district honors and second team all conference honors in 2011.  She plans to continue her volleyball career in college.

 Emma has several years of experience as a setter for various club teams, including Johnston Volleyball Club National Team, Power Plex Volleyball, Sports University National Team and MAC Volleyball.

 Emma has also lettered three years for the varsity tennis team.

Emma will join Brianna Nelson and Sam Philiph as our 12's league coaches.

     
Curt Larkin Curt The 2005 Iowa Male Coach of the Year for USAVB, Curt has many years of experience. With experience s a Head HS coach as well as Coaching for the Iowa Rockets prior to moving to Johnston. As National teams director, his focus will be on developing that same success with JVBC. A counselor at JHS, Curt incorporates "life skills" into every volleyball practice, match, and event. Curt is a CAP II level coach with USAVB.
     
Chet Mennenga  

Chet got started/interested in volleyball through his fiance Shelly Miller. He was Shelly's assistant coach for the 2010 14 Gold team. Chet's coaching strengths include building team work attributes in athletes and providing extreme motivation and guidence on and off the court.

Chet attended Iowa Central Comm College where he walked on to the football team. He currently plays Semi Pro Football (Des Moines Blaze,) which was the 2011 Semi Pro National Champions.

     
Shelly Miller Shelly

Shelly comes to us from Iowa Mennonite School of Kalona, IA. She started her volleyball career at Ellsworth Community College and contiued it at Grand View University, as a defensive specialist and utility player. She has coached for Venus Fire of Des Moines and currently plays volleyball in Ames, Des Moines and Ankeny. This will be Shelly's third season with JVBC.

     
Brianna Nelson Bri Nelson Bri Nelson has been attending Johnston High School since 2009 where she's been a two year varsity letter winner as a defensive specialist.. She played for JVBC the past two years and her 16 National team qualified for the Junior National Championships in Reno, Nevada in 2010. Her ability to read the court and remain stable throughout matches will contribute to coaching the 12U League at JVBC this year. She has a strong love for the game and we are excited to have her as part of the JVBC coaching cadre!!
     
Sam Philiph

Sam Philiph attends Johnston High School and is a two year varsity letter recipient as an outside hitter.  Sam has played club volleyball for JVBC and CIS and has participated in 2 trips to Nationals. Sam plans on playing volleyball in college where she will major in secondary education and pursue her coaching certification.  Sam's enthusiasm for volleyball will be an excellent addition to the JVBC coaching staff, and will join Brianna Nelson and Emma Harmeyer coaching 12's.   

     
Laura Roeder-Grubb Laura RG The 2006 Iowa Female Coach of the year and 2008 Outstanding Junior Leader for USAVB, she is a long time fixture in Central Iowa Volleyball. Laura is known for GREAT fundamental skill coaching in ALL skills. Laura served in helping to build the current Ankeny Volleyball Club as well as the former Sports University Club. Laura's 14U National team qualified for the 2010 USAVB National Championships, and finished 21st in the American division. One of the most recognizable faces of volleyball in Central Iowa, you'll also see her as a top official for Iowa High School matches in the fall.
     
Michelle Roquet Michelle Roquet Michelle comes to us as a graduate from Boone High School where she was a four-sport athete. She went on to play basketball at Wartburg College and now currently teaches K-2 Physical Education in Johnston. She has coached a variety of sports at the middle school and high school levels and is the 7th grade volleyball coach at Johnston. This is her first year with JVBC and we are excited to have her!
     

Sarah Schuster

Sarah Schuster Sarah is starting her 7th season with the Johnston Volleyball Club. She has coached at both the regional and national levels. Sarah just finished her first season as an assistant volleyball coach at Simpson College. Prior to that she volunteered for three years with the Drake University volleyball team. A graduate of Drake, she played four years there from 2004-2007, as a starting setter. Schuster has also led the Indianola High School volleyball camps as well as middle school and high school summer camps at Drake. Sarah currently resides in Indianola, where she is a 3rd grade teacher at Irving Elementary.
     
Kelly Scott Kelly Kelly has accumulated a VAST array of knowledge of the game through his many experiences as a coach. Former Iowa City City High's head coach, Kelly has had the chance to coach with some top coaches in the country while being stationed throughout the US. He returns to coach for his 5th year at JVBC and brings a TON of positive approaches to the game in ALL areas. Kelly is a CAP I level coach with USAVB.
     
Alex Zwiefel Alex

Alex grew up playing club volleyball for over seven years and continued in college playing intramurals and sand. She was a member of the 2004 Ankeny High School state championship volleyball team as the starting setter. She brings great understanding of fundamental skills and passion to the game and is in her 2nd year with JVBC!
